Event row of porta potties with hand-wash stations

Porta potty calculator

The porta potty calculator gives a unit count for an event or a job site in seconds. For events, it multiplies guests by hours and divides by 200, then adds units for alcohol, accessible units and hand-wash stations. For job sites, it shows the OSHA minimum and our comfortable count.

Assumptions: one standard unit per 200 guest-hours. Alcohol adds 1 unit for every 5, rounded up (1–5 units add 1, 6–10 add 2). Accessible units follow the 5% cluster rule. Food adds 1 hand-wash station per 2 toilets, rounded up. This is Landon's planning method, not a legal standard.

How many porta potties do I need for a party or event?

A party needs one standard porta potty for every 200 guest-hours. Multiply guests by hours, divide by 200 and round up. A 75-guest, 4-hour party has 300 guest-hours and needs 2 units. A 150-guest, 6-hour event has 900 guest-hours and needs 5 units.

Standard units needed. Our planning method: one standard unit per 200 guest-hours (guests × hours), rounded up. Serving alcohol? Add 1 unit for every 5 on the chart, rounded up (1–5 units add 1, 6–10 add 2).

Adding units for alcohol

Alcohol means more restroom trips, so the method adds units. If the chart says 5 units, add 1 unit because alcohol is served, for 6 in total. If the chart says 2, still add 1, for 3.

Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, with a bar

  1. 150 guests × 5 hours = 750 guest-hours.
  2. 750 ÷ 200 = 3.75, rounded up to 4 units.
  3. Alcohol: add 1 unit for every 5 on the chart, at least 1. Total: 5 units.
  4. Public or mixed-ability crowd: make at least 1 of the 5 wheelchair-accessible.
  5. Food served: add 3 hand-wash stations (1 per 2 toilets, rounded up).

How many porta potties does a work crew need?

A work crew of 20 or fewer people needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Larger crews need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. For comfort, Landon suggests 1 standard unit per 10 workers with weekly service. The full OSHA table and job-site setup are on the construction porta potty page.

Read the official rule at eCFR 29 CFR 1926.51. Farm field crews follow a different rule, OSHA 1928.110: one toilet and one hand-washing facility per 20 workers, within a quarter-mile walk.

How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties are required?

Where portable toilets are grouped in a cluster, at least 5 percent of the units in each cluster, and never fewer than one, must be accessible under 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. A 10-unit cluster needs 1 accessible unit. A 30-unit cluster needs 2. Each accessible unit needs a 60-inch turning circle or T-shaped space inside.

That is the legal minimum. Our recommendation: put at least one wheelchair-accessible unit at every public event, even a small one. See the U.S. Access Board guide to toilet rooms. Confirm event rules with your venue or permit office; this is not legal advice.

More sizing questions

How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?

One hundred guests need 2 standard porta potties for a 4-hour party, 3 for 6 hours and 4 for 8 hours. Add 1 more if alcohol is served. Make one of them wheelchair-accessible for a public event, and add a hand-wash station when food is served.

How many porta potties for 200 guests at a wedding?

Two hundred wedding guests at a 5-hour reception need 5 standard units from the chart, plus 1 for the bar, for 6 in total. For more comfort at the same size, see the restroom trailer guest guide on the trailer page.

Do I need more porta potties if most guests are women?

Our chart assumes a mixed crowd. For a mostly female crowd, such as a bridal shower, lines form faster, so round up to the next row of the chart or add one unit. Call and we will look at the schedule of the event with you.

How many porta potties for a construction crew of 9?

A crew of 9 needs 1 standard porta potty under OSHA, which requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. One unit with weekly service handles 9 workers on a normal 40-hour week. Add a second unit or a second weekly visit if the crew grows past 10.

Do I need a porta potty for a 2-hour party?

A short party still benefits from one unit when guests number more than about 25, the house has one bathroom, or the home runs on a septic tank. A 2-hour party of 100 guests needs 1 standard unit by the chart. The event price is the same for 2 hours or 7 days.

When should I switch from porta potties to a restroom trailer?

Switch to a restroom trailer when the event has more than about 75 guests, lasts 5 hours or more, guests dress up, and a 110-volt outlet sits within 100 feet. A 3-stall trailer covers about 100 to 150 guests. Add one wheelchair-accessible unit, because trailers have steps.

How many hand-wash stations do I need?

Plan one two-sink hand-wash station for every two toilets when food is served. A 4-toilet barbecue needs 2 stations; a 5-toilet event needs 3. Without food, the sanitizer inside each toilet is usually enough. Construction crews using paints, coatings or chemicals need washing facilities under OSHA 1926.51(f).
